Earthea Nance

Dr. Earthea Nance is the Manager of Infrastructure and Planning for the Mayor’s Office of Recovery Management, City of New Orleans. She is on leave from her position as an Assistant Professor of Urban Environmental Studies at Virginia Tech. She was formerly a Martin Luther King Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She was also Executive Director and Founder of the People’s Environmental Center in New Orleans. Previously she served as an Environmental Engineer for the Environmental Protection Department of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, and as Principal Engineer for two consulting firms in California.

Dr. Nance earned a self-designed interdisciplinary Ph.D. from Stanford University in the areas of environmental planning and management, anthropology, and Latin American studies. She holds M.S. and B.S. degrees in civil and environmental engineering from the University of California, and she is a licensed professional civil engineer (license no. C55925) with over 14 years of professional experience as a principal engineer, environmental/chemical engineer, and environmental engineer for several private and public sector organizations. Her main areas of research and teaching are sustainable urban infrastructure (especially water, wastewater, and solid/hazardous waste), environmental planning and management, community participation and grassroots organizing, environmental justice, research methods (especially case study, evaluation, and anthropological methods), and Brazilian studies. Dr. Nance is currently writing a book about community participation in Brazil’s water and sanitation sector.
