Lavon Wright

K. Lavon Wright, a native of New Orleans, received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary & Special Education K-12 from Elon University in Burlington, North Carolina. Looking to serve the global community, she served two primary schools in the country of Lesotho, Southern Africa through the United States Peace Corps, and returned to New Orleans as an elementary third and fifth grade school teacher at Medard H. Nelson Elementary School.

Recognizing persistent, counteractive factors influencing her classroom, not from the school system as many blame, but from a lack of parental ability and responsibility, she was led to a greater interest in business development and government policy. Lavon received a Masters Degree in Political Science with a specialization in Applied Community Development from Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. Chosen as a Mayor’s Office of Economic Development Mayoral Fellow and later hired as a Community Development Specialist granted business retention and expansion responsibilities to Lavon inclusive of the Renewal Community and Urban Development Action Grant program. Lavon most recently joined the Office of Recovery Management’s Population & Resettlement Division with the primary goal of crafting an economic framework for the City’s designated target areas to promote and sustain business growth. Lavon also serves as a liaison between ORM and various neighborhood associations.
